The Albert H. Small Center for National Capital Area Studies welcomed Allie Richmond in September 2024 as the digital media editor for Evolution D.C. She is a first-year student in the graduate art history program at the George Washington University. Before attending GW, she graduated from the University of South Carolina in 2023 with a bachelor’s degree in history and art history.
Originally from Georgia, Allie developed an interest in museum work as a marketing communications and historic house intern at the Atlanta History Center. The center’s focus on local history helped Allie learn more about her home state’s past while also honing skills in museum management and historical research. She chose GW to continue her studies in history and art because of its rigorous academic programs and prime location in Washington, D.C., offering unparalleled access to art museums and archives. Soon after arriving on campus, Allie applied to work for The George Washington University Museum and The Textile Museum. She saw the role of digital media editor as a promising opportunity to deepen her knowledge of museum operations and round out her perspective of the field.

While Allie’s primary responsibility at the museum is generating content and managing logistics for Evolution D.C., her projects change across the academic year. During the 2024 fall semester, Allie recapped D.C. Mondays programs for the blog. She also researched maps, illustrations and magazines in the Albert H. Small Washingtoniana Collection for a special collection spotlight series exploring the National Mall’s history. This spring, she is working with students in Professor Jessica McCaughey’s COMM 3190 class to publish stories and program recaps with Evolution D.C.
Working at an art museum full-time is Allie’s professional goal. She has enjoyed exploring different opportunities in the field so far and is open to many possible career paths within museum operations. When asked about managing Evolution D.C., Allie emphasized that she always tries to create exciting, engaging content that aligns with readers’ interests.
Allie loves learning D.C.’s history and connecting her studies back to her new home. She is especially eager to share her research on the National Mall, an experience she describes as “fulfilling and hands-on.” Read the first post in her blog series now!
